About Us

We are representing the Faculty of Information & Communication Technologies at FON University, Skopje. Our team consists of the folowing members: Darko Bozhinoski (a student in third year), MSc. Gorgi Kakasevski and the Dean of our faculty, professor Solza Grceva.

In this project our goal was to raise awareness of the children from the early ages about nowadays world’s situation according to the climate change problems defined in MDG. The goal of our project is to encourage the teachers to use the opened data from different sets of the World Bank to stimulate the children and raise awareness about the problems defined as Millenium Development Goals(MDG), because children are our future.

Climate Change

Climate change is potentially one of the most critical issues facing the world – one that will affect all parts of the planet and all future generations. It is crucial that all of us begin to understand the probable causes, likely affects, and how our everyday choices have global consequences.

Climate change is expected to hit developing countries the hardest. Its effects pose risks for agriculture, food, and water supplies. At stake are recent gains in the fight against poverty, hunger and disease, and the lives and livelihoods of billions of people in developing countries. Children are our hope! Involving the children in the climate change awareness process and teaching them about the consequences for their actions would have a great impact of the world’s future. With that idea on mind, we decided to make a new concept using the data of the World Bank.

Climate for Children

The aim of our project is to make a prototype of multimedia interactive presentations and games which will be used on interactive boards in classroom. This presentation will use different sets of opened data that will make the learning process easier and more interesting. Using the opened data with the new technologies like Interactive boards, teachers can really improve the students’ experience making a big number of multimedia interactivity presentations that will be available for a broad range of people including other teachers and students. Audience response technology has proven the ability to deliver stimulating learning environments. The Professor of Sociology Professor of Sociology Robert Hanneman said: “It really does break up some of the lecture – it does energize the audience - the students learn better when there is some level of emotional arousal - the higher the energy, the greater the learning. This technology does seem to have that kind of positive effect on the energy of the room.” In conclusion we can say that presenting this content on Interactive boards will definitely make the learning process more attractive and fun. Interactive boards provide rich learning environment that integrates with traditional classroom layouts and collective activities. They boost creativity, encourage collaboration between students and teachers, and allow moving away from teacher-centric to a more personalized constructive learning. This will definitely increase teaching productivity by combining the power of traditional multimedia with the ability to navigate the content more flexibly.

About the Presentations

We’ve made a serial of interactive multimedia presentations and games using different sets of data from the World Bank and the United Nations.  We had test our presentations and games on pilot schools and we encounter a positive response from them. The students were really excited about the presentations and in the survey we’ve made about them we saw that they really liked this new way of learning and they offered us a full support. They were encouraged to give ideas that will help them to better understand the world problems and we are planning to use this ideas for the following presentations. In the presentations are included different sets of data including climate and general set of data from the World Bank and data from the Human Development Reports.

Using the embedded codes the students can interact with the presentations, finding data for a specific country that they are interested in and using these presentations to discover how they can contribute to solve a particular problem. In these presentations different maps from different parts of the world are also included presenting the data for a specific indicator. On the presentations you can find a big number of different games and assignments that contributes for stimulation of the students for better learining and understanding the material. This concept can really bring students closer to the problems that the world is facing nowadays and everyone will have a great benefit from it.

As the part of an UNESCO project our university was involved in making a portal: http://freelearning.edu.mk/ which was started this year. The aim of this portal is free sharing of materials that will improve the learning process of the elementary and high school students in our country. On this portal students and teachers can make profiles and post different materials for different subjects. Because of that, we put these interactive presentations on this portal. This can lead students to understand better the reasons and the consequences of the climate changes. This system was really popular among the students and the teachers in our country because it represents a place where all the students no matter where they live and study may be included and have an access to different kind of materials like quizzes, videos, assignments, lectures, presentations etc.

For our prototype we used the Promethean's software, ActivInspire which enables educators to bring lessons to life via their interactive, multi-media whiteboards.

You can find our multimedia interactive presentations and games on the following link.

In this project our goal was to raise awareness of the children from the early ages about nowadays world’s situation according to the problems defined in MDG. We’ve made a serial of interactive multimedia presentations using different datasets. Our goal is to create a huge range of interactive presentations and games and to include these problems in the education process using the latest technology and encourage the teachers to use the opened data to stimulate the children and raise awareness, because children are our future.

Future Plans

Our future work will include:

- Expanding the scope of the interactive multimedia presentations for every indicator from the opened data from the World Bank

- Expanding the interactivity including different kinds of games and exercises in the presentations

- Translating the presentations in other languages: German, Italian, etc.

- Promoting the presentations in the elementary and high schools in our country and on other sites for sharing materials
